playing with dinos

Maisie and Duke claimed the landing off the kitchen for their special play place.

They'd play with toys there, lay there, talk there. They were always there!

he keeps us smiling :)

Revolutionary War Camp

Caleb got to go to Revolutionary War Camp in July!

He LOVED it! There goes my redcoat out the door one morning.

He took everything so seriously, learning the skills of musketry and more. He was supposed to be a redcoat half the week and a patriot the other half, but he didn't end up switching for some reason. So he was a traitor the whole week. And him with a great-great...grandpa for a patriot!

It was a great experience for him, and it was a really great camp.

On the last night, the dads came too and the boys and dads camped out together. They also performed some musket and marching drills for the parents.

Wedding clothes

I tried on Maisie's flower girl dress and Duke's ring-bearer clothes to make sure they fit, since we ordered them online. They were very pleased with their special clothes and proceeded to have a picnic to celebrate.

Whoa—where have we seen THAT face before?!?

* Duke at TWO *

Talks in complete sentences, as in 7-word sentences. (Honestly, I think it would be virtually impossible to spend his days with Maisie-the-chatterer and not learn to talk!)

When he doesn't like something it's always emphasized with "eh-nee-MOH!" as in, "I don't wan eat my dinnuh eh-nee-MOH!" The hands are normally thrown down for extra emphasis.

Is between 10-25th percentiles for height, 25-50th for weight, 50th for head.

Loves to read his picture book about trucks and can say all the names, from "excavator" to "digger" to "car transporter." So cute to hear!!

Other favorite books include "Curious George Gets A Medal," "Curious George Flies A Kite," "Harold and the Purple Crayon," "Airplanes," and "Lentil."

Likes to watch Diego, Dora, Caillou.

Still takes an afternoon nap.

Is starting to use the potty.

Is super cute! Lots of personality!

Is friendly and will talk to strangers. They always respond to him.

Won't go to any Sunday School class. Uh-uh. No way. Not happening.

LOVES his tool box and tools!!

Has the cutest, chubbiest hands ever.

Sleeps through the night about 30% of the time.

LOVES FOOD!!

Duke's birthday - part 2

Don't worry, this is the last birthday post for Duke...sort of. One more later in the month, but there's good reason.

Fortunately I was sick and didn't take too many photos of Duke so I was able to narrow them down.  ;)

Waiting for cake and presents!

Time for cake!

Blow out the candles!

Hurray!!

My big disappoint of being sick, I—gasp—Braden, that is, BOUGHT a birthday cake from the store. Had I been even a smidge better, I would have attempted a cake. But I literally removed myself from my bed just to enjoy his birthday cake and presents. That store-bought cake was a hard pill for this mommy to swallow...but you'll see in a few posts how I made up for it!

The good news is Duke didn't seem to care a bit! ;)

Oh boy, I love my new toys!

And I love my new animals!

And I think I love this new lemur.

I don't have a picture of Duke with his hammer, but that was definitely the winning present (from Uncle Gair). Duke slept with his hammer for weeks afterward.

Happy Two Years Old, Duke!
You bring us so much laughter and joy.

Duke's birthday - part 1

Oh my goodness!

Who knows how many posts Duke's birthday will be?

With a kid as cute as this, how do you choose just one photo?

I mean there's like 5 adorable ones of him just eating a banana on his birthday.

Oh Duke! You're just TOO cute!

Jamaica

Braden and I went away for 5 days to Jamaica for a delayed 10-year anniversary trip. (The Duke's birth delayed us—a mighty good reason for a delay!)

We had mostly a good time there. The big downer was that I came down with the cold the kids had had on the 2nd day we were there, so the last two days I felt pretty awful.

But as I said there, "At least I'm sick in a beautiful place!"

Unfortunately, we had a horrible flight experience home. We had to fly to Newark then to Dulles, but before we even left Jamaica we got word that our flight from Newark to Dulles had been canceled (still not sure why it was).

At that point I told Braden to reserve a rental car online at Newark in case we needed to drive home. (I've been stranded overnight before at Newark.) And if we didn't reserve one now, we'd never get one when we needed it.

Poor Braden spent nearly an hour doing that—the internet was terrible at the airport and he was having trouble after trouble.

While we were flying enroute to Newark we ended up being diverted to Dulles because Newark was shut down due to bad weather. Awesome, right? Still no flight from Newark to Dulles scheduled for us, and now we're landing at Dulles! You would think they would let us off the plane in Dulles, right? Oh no!

They gave us all sorts of excuses—the story ever changing. (From what we learned they could have, but they just didn't want to deal with it.) And so we sat for a long while connected to a gate at Dulles.

I had woken up that morning feeling better, but at this point I was starting to feel REALLY sick. Then we took off—with Newark still closed—in hopes that Newark would be open by time we got there. It was.
(Hey! That dress looks familiar. Yep, wore it on our honeymoon in Kauai.)

By this time is was midnight. We had left Jamaica at 11am and had last eaten at 10am. I felt like I was dying. I was feverish and every cough left me in pain in my entire torso. I was sure I had pneumonia.

We had a flight scheduled for 10am the next morning, and that was just in time for the hurricane to hit that was coming up the coast. We opted for the rental car. (And it was a good thing we had reserved it—the other stranded passengers like us who had wanted to get off at Dulles couldn't get rental cars to drive back.)

And so we arrived home at 4am. I slept for the next 48 hours, literally, waking only for a few minutes here or there. I was so sick. There's only one other time I have felt that sick and that was back in high school.

I missed the 4th of July entirely. I finally started feeling better just in time to remove myself from bed to sit at the table to celebrate Duke's birthday.

But my sickness lingered on, until I finally developed my first ever sinus infection. No fun!! And I went on antibiotics for sickness for the first time in my life.

But the good news is that I felt so much better after that!

BUT, all that behind us now, Jamaica was lovely!! The water would be brilliant and turquoise some days and other days blue-grey and oceany. I guess it varied based on the sunlight and tides.

Braden and I never have been one for resorts. We prefer to get out on our own and aren't the "lay on the beach" type of people.
(The bourganvilla is everywhere there! One of my favorite plants—after seeing it in the south of France, I fell in love with it.)

But we were so tired and worn out from selling our house, the job transition, church issues for the past 3 years, and two babies back to back, that the thought of just paying once for everything and then doing nothing for 5 days sounded delightful!

We never checked the time. We just woke up when we wanted, ate when we wanted, went to the beach or pool when we wanted, read when we wanted. We lived in our swimsuits. It was great!

We snorkeled a little and tried our hand at ocean kayaking. We watched some of the world cup. It was definitely RESTFUL. And we needed restful.
